--------------------------[ ARTISTS INFO ]---------------------------------

:: APPARAT BIO ::
Berlin’s Apparat (aka Sascha Ring) has been a sonic force in the Decibel arsenal for going on six years. Since blowing the roof off of a sold out Chop Suey back in 2005 (2nd annual Decibel Festival) this lanky, mop-topped Krautrocker has been fueling dance floor mayhem in Seattle with unparalleled ferocity and technical skill.

A true renaissance man, Sascha is an accomplished sound engineer, composer, visual artist, guitarist, vocalist and business man (co-founder of the Shitkatapult label) whose profound love of music and technology shine through in every aspect of his impressive music catalog going back to 2001.

His exceptional talent as a producer and composer has rewarded him with consistent work as a remix artist, including remixes for Moby, Royksopp, Boys Noize, Ladytron, Johnny Cash, Nathan Fake, Paul Kalkbrenner and Seattle’s own Lusine.

In addition to producing three critically acclaimed solo albums, nine EPs and over a dozen remixes for some of the world’s most prestigious labels; this 30 year old wunderkind has co-produced albums with follow Berliner dance icons Ellen Allien and Modeselektor (Bpitch Control). His most recent collaboration with Modeselektor as "Moderat" has gone on to become one of the best reviewed electronic music albums of 2009 and sent the two acts on a hugely successful A/V tour where they performed at some of the worlds largest electronic music festivals (Electric Picnic, Sonar, Pukkelpop, MUTEK, Melt, etc).

This New Year’s Eve, Sascha will be returning to form with a very special dance PA, similar to his 2005 and 2006 Decibel Festival sets, both of which were considered to be overall highlights.

:: NOSAJ THING BIO ::
After cutting his teeth by making music on various archaic computers and programs in his early years, Nosaj Thing is now, without a doubt, among L.A.'s finest musical modulators. His electronic soundscapes and wild beat tectonics play like vignettes that affect the listener's mind as deeply as he hits their soul. Nosaj Thing creates nothing less than the sound mastery of beat driven, experimental electronics from a gifted noise constructor.

His debut album Drift was released by Alpha Pup in June 2009 to unanimous global acclaim. Pitchfork awarded an excellent 7.9 rating, calling the album "gorgeously haunted... sonic Easter Eggs for a thousand listens." The album peaked at 5 on the iTunes Electronic chart, and went all the way to 1 on Bleep and Boomkat. The success of Drift led to Nosaj Thing being featured in magazines such as Spin, Fader, XLR8R, The New Yorker, Nylon and URB. He has received regular airplay on BBC Radio 1 and Los Angeles' KCRW, while his engaging live set has made him a staple of the worldwide underground touring circuit.

Nosaj's inspiring live sets before Glitch Mob and Daedelus earlier this year have made him one of the most in demand and highly regarded electronic music performers in Seattle.

:: LUSINE BIO ::
Jeff McIlwain has been producing his visceral, melodic strain of abstract electronic music as Lusine for 10 years now. Originally a Texas native, Jeff attended CalArts in 1998, studying 20th-century electronic music and sound design for music and film. Soon after, he met Shad Scott and put out his self-titled debut as Lusine for Isophlux. Since then, McIlwain relocated to Seattle and began steadily releasing his music on Ghostly International (home to 2004’s landmark Serial Hodgepodge as well as its successful followup remix album Podgelism), Hymen, and U-Cover. McIlwain has also contributed tracks to various compilations and remix releases on Mute, !K7, Kompakt, Asthmatic Kitty, and Shitkatapult. His Language Barrier full-length on Hymen Records was something of a departure, as McIlwain focused less on jagged rhythmic detail and more on the layers of ambience that lay beneath the percussion of his previous releases.

McIlwain has performed throughout the US and abroad, including a set at London’s esteemed Fabric nightclub, and an ambient multimedia performance at Seattle’s Triple Door in which he collaborated with video artist Scott Sunn. McIlwain has recently been involved in two film projects, co-scoring David Gordon Green’s 2008 film Snow Angels (with Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell), and scoring Kevin Bray’s 2009 film Linewatch (with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Omari Hardwick).

McIlwain’s 2009 release, A Certain Distance, has gone on to become his best reviewed and best selling album to date. In addition, 2009 has brought Lusine several high profile festival performances, including DEMF, MUTEK, Sonar and the Decibel Festival.

:: THE SIGHT BELOW ::
The music of The Sight Below conjures half-remembered dreams and soft-focus sentiments with elegiac beauty; his video art works similarly, blurring snippets of film until they’re recognizable only as organic objects: black-and-white amoebas milling about, or a sunset rendered in grayscale.

All of The Sight Below’s songs are performed live: The artist runs E-bowed, slide, and lightly picked guitars through a series of loopers, 12-bit reverb boxes, and delay units, kneading and distending the notes until they drone like bees in a tunnel or keen like an orchestra of singing saws. The resulting swirl is pinned to propulsive, achingly subtle electronic percussion, which guides the listener through the gloom towards the music’s hopeful center. The resulting ambient works seem as effortless as natural phenomena; in fact, they’re carefully played, head-nodding hymns to the artist’s solitary life.

'Glider' and its accompanying 'No Place for Us' EP, The Sight Below’s 2008 debut releases on Ghostly International, were well-received in ambient circles and in the music world at large, gaining plaudits from international publications and musicians (including Radiohead’s Thom Yorke). The Sight Below spent the year touring the world, playing a slate of successful shows at DEMF, MUTEK, and SONAR, and collaborating extensively with Simon Scott (ex-member of legendary 'shoegaze' band Slowdive). The Sight Below is currently working on new material with Scott for a future release.

:: NORDIC SOUL BIO ::
Nordic Soul has long been enamored with artistic expression, the creation of music, and the technology that fuses it all together, much to the benefit and evolution of the world of electronica and the underground culture that surrounds it. His healthy obsession began at the age of eleven in Detroit with the gift of his first guitar, got a kick in the ass with the purchase of a keyboard and drum machine during his teenage years, and continues to the present as the king of Seattle techno exists as the founder and director of the Decibel Festival. Known to his friends as Sean Horton, this DJ, producer, performer, and programmer brought a distinct and dirty Detroit flavor with him to Seattle in the mid-90’s and the musical zeitgeist of the city has been forever transformed by his presence.

Nordic Soul has deeply impacted the electronic community not only through his work for the annual Decibel Festival but also by slaying Seattle dance floors year-round. His emotionally charged sets are infused with live instrumentation and ripe with the mélange of organic and synthesized tones, all riding on top of heavy bass lines. The resulting music is a living, hybrid creature with a rich sense of soul that delights in its own existence. A lover of many musical styles, Nordic Soul’s interest and roots in hip hop, IDM, industrial, and dub contribute to his current musical palette that straight drips techno into the mouths of the waiting audience, thirsty for the unrelenting madness and unabated aural penetration that is electronic music.

Since Nordic Soul's inception in 2003 he's shared the stage with a diverse cross section of international talent, including Modeselektor, Moby, Bassnectar, Trentemoller, Simian Mobile Disco, Green Velvet, Radio Slave, Derrick May, Boys Noize, John Tejada, Monolake, Thomas Fehlmann, Kraak & Smaak, Matthew Dear, Funkstroung, Cobblestone Jazz, Luomo, Miles Dyson, Tipper and Four Tet to name a few.

:: KILLINGFRENZY BIO ::
KillingFrenzy (aka Leo Mayberry) has been composing, coordinating and performing live video for the last eight years as KillingFrenzy Visuals. Projects have varied from improvisational explorations with Steve Fisk and Greg Gilmore to complicated theater performance with the Degenerate Art Ensemble. Custom applications in Max/MSP/Jitter, and an eclectic catalog of material to draw from allow the flexibility necessary to thrive in environments from gothic ambience to breakcore meltdown. Use of mirrors, motors, and non-standard screen compositions are all ways he’s working to shatter the screen and release the image.

Since found KillingFrenzy in 2000, he's performed in Seattle's Major venues: Showbox, Chop Suey, NAF Studios, The Sunset Tavern, The Hi Dive, CHAC, Lower Level, the FUNC, El Corazon, Tost, Consolidated Works, The Hall, The Columbia City Theater, The Tractor Tavern, The Premiere, Nectar, EMP Skychurch, Re-Bar, EyeSpy, Crocodile Cafe, The Fenix Underground, The Bohemian and Neumos.

Leo acted as the Decibel Festival Visual Coordinator for the 2007 and 2008 editions.

Hey! I'm a n00b here and i've been supporting kexp for... approximately 9 years now? i'll even volunteer sometimes and am usually a member!

over this summer i was swept into the local scene and serve a real purpose helping to promote bands. here are some of my favorites that i would like to share with you! (** indicates my particular favorites but the rest are still good!)

**The Ever Changing Sky - purely instrumental. experimental/ambient/space rock.
The Vague Prophets - rock. i've heard comparisons to nirvana many times but i, and the band, fail to hear the resemblance.
**Wah Wah Exit Wound - mostly instrumental but there is a singer just in case. japanese classic/progressive/rock fusion.
**Miniature - crunk/dutch pop/western swing. these boys are loads of fun and so is the music!
Evangelist - Death metal/grindcore/punk. kexp needs to have a program made for these kinds of bands! (note: singer has recently departed band for personal reasons).
Castor & Pollution - psychedelic/electronica/showtunes. emphasis on psychedelic.
**Joy Wants Eternity - experimental/ambient/indie. epic feel like a movie shot in space. seems like ur constantly riding the climax.
**Kinski - psychedelic/experimental/rock. notorious in the local scene for 10 years and counting!

anyone noticing an experimental/psychedelic love trend? yes, they all have a myspace page so feel free to google away and check them out! i am personally tied to The Ever Changing Sky, The Vague Prophets, Wah Wah Exit Wound, Miniature, and Evangelist.

Come out and see The Ever Changing Sky, Castor & Pollution, and Stepkid @ the Josephine in Ballard Saturday 10/24! show starts around 8 or 9pm. Tix are never more than $6. i'll see u there!

HIS HOLINESS ORGYEN KUSUM LINGPA

August 24 – 29th, 2007

His Holiness is an extraordinary Dzogchen Guru from the Nyingma Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. His Holiness is a Terton or Treasure Revealer possessing the knowledge and authority to transmit the secret essence of Vajrayana, hidden centuries ago by Padmasambhava. His Holiness possesses the enlightened wisdom of the past, present and future and is a powerful spiritual guide for sentient beings fortunate enough to meet Him. A highly realized Maha Siddha considered a Master among Masters.

His Holiness works tirelessly to teach and bestow empowerments on the great perfection lineage of Dzogchen Pema Nying-Thig to millions of lay Buddhist practitioners, ordained monks/nuns, and Vajrayana students throughout the world.

His Holiness will bestow many teachings and empowerments this time when He visits Seattle to help practitioners realize the true nature of their mind. This is a very auspicious opportunity to receive blessings directly from a highly realized Vajra Dharma Guru.

VAJRAKILAYA EMPOWERMENT - Friday, Aug 24th (6PM - 8PM)
The practice of Vajrakilaya blazes at the very heart of the ancient Vajrayana traditions of Tibet. The wrathful Heruka Vajrakilaya is a Deity who embodies the enlightened activities of all the Buddhas, manifesting in an intensly wrathful yet compassionate form in order to subjugate the delusion and negativity that can arise as obstacles to the practice of Dharma.

In fact, the practice of Vajrakilaya is famous in Tibetan Buddhism as an exceptionally powerful method to remove obstacles, destroy the forces hostile to compassion, and purify the spiritual pollution so prevalent in this age. Vajrakilaya practice is extremely powerful in removing outer, inner and secret obstacles on the Dharma path and is said to bring swift ordinary and extraordinary spiritual accomplishments. It can also avert misfortunes such as war, disease and famine. The practice of this deity makes it very easy to progress on the path, since all obstacles are naturally dispelled and one can achieve the supreme siddhi without any fault.

In summary, the practice of Vajrakilaya reigns supreme amongst Meditational Deities. Practitioners of Vajrayana should all receive this most excellent empowement.

AMITABHA EMPOWERMENT and PHOWA TRANSMISSION
Saturday, Aug 25th (10AM - 12PM)

Phowa is the profound path to Buddhahood without meditation, where the student learns how to transfer his or her consciousness directly to the pure land at the time of death without having to go through the experiences of the intermediate state or fall into any one of the six realms of samsara. This is a skillful method through which anyone with faith may swiftly be liberated.

Through this Empowerment, the seeds are planted in the studentsْ mind streams so they may practice conscious dying at the time of death, through their faith and devotion in the Lama and the practice of P'howa one may be able to bypass rebirth and go to the pure land of Amitabha, the Buddha of Limitless Light.

SHI-TRO EMPOWERMENT - Saturday, Aug 25th (2:30PM – 4:30PM)

This empowerment into the Mandala of the 42 Peaceful and 58 Wrathful
Enlightened Deities grant blessings beyond expression. It introduces us to the display of the peaceful and wrathful energies of the enlightened mind as they appear to beings in the intermediate state, or Bardo, between death and the next rebirth.

This empowerment will truly be a priceless opportunity to affirm our connection with the enlightened Deities, to purify damaged or impaired samaya and strengthen our spiritual connection. It is recommended for all students who wish to progress along the path of secret mantra and purify their defilements and negative karma of body, speech, and mind. The Shi-tro Empowerment is highly suggested for all who attend the Bardo teachings.

EXTENSIVE BARDO TEACHINGS - Sunday - Wednesday
Aug 26th - 29th (10 AM – 12 PM and 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM)

Join us for 4 days of extensive teachings on the Six Bardos, or intermediate states, including the Bardo of Birth, the Bardo of Dreaming, the Bardo of Meditation, the Bardo of Dying, the Bardo of Dharmata, and the Bardo of Becoming. Each of these six bardos presents us with opportunities for recognizing the true nature of our mind and being liberated from the duality of
self-clinging and subject-object grasping.

Receiving these teachings from a living master who has direct realization of this is a rare and priceless gift. Through these instructions, there is opportunity for finding enlightenment when encountering these bardos, rather than being overwhelmed by them or frightened by the appearances of the dying state and so forth. This is a precious opportunity to prepare ourselves for that moment of death we will all have to face, and to make a connection with a Vajra Dharma Master who can guide us along the path of liberation.

Protest the North American Union!!!

Come and protest the "amero" AUGUST 18th at 1 p.m. at Seattle Center!!!

Read below for more information...

Opposition Builds to the North American Union
author: onthewingsofhelios
August 20-21, 2007 the leaders of Canada, the United States, and Mexico will meet in Montebello, Quebec to attend their semi-secret third Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America summit meeting to advance the North American Union that is already rapidly being established without the involvement of congress or the knowledge of citizens.
Connie Fogal of the Canadian Action Party was on the Alex Jones Radio Show at infowars.com yesterday to discuss the upcoming meeting in Montebello, Quebec, and where the press and public are NOT welcome.

A 25 km (18 mile) security perimeter will be established around the town of Montebello to keep reporters and demonstrators from bringing attention to what is going on; however, many reporters and protesters plan to go there anyway, at least to the perimeter.

A demonstration protesting the meeting and the North American Union will also be held in the United States at the Seattle Center in Seattle on Saturday, August 18, at 1 PM.

In March 2005 George W. Bush and the leaders of Canada and Mexico signed an agreement to form a security and prosperity partnership for a North American "Community." In other words, they agreed to build a North American Union, but while the agreement received little media coverage at the time, it would take another year for even those following the news closely to begin to the significance and scope of the agreement. Every one of our governmental departments was joined with an appointed spp.gov working group that is rewriting regulations and laws to merge the three governmental systems into a regional government. Congress will serve largely to rubber stamp laws as they are presented by these unelected committees, as is now the case for legislatures in the European Union countries.

According to Connie Fogal of the Canadian Action Party, the spp.gov agreement was a political coup d'etat. It was a take over of the executive government of North America with a transfer of power into private unelected committees following the Soviet model. It was, as radio talk show host Alex Jones says, "Red Dawn in slow motion."

The idea of a North American Union might sound innocent enough or even like a nice idea unless you understand the form of government being set in place. It is worth setting aside time to study what is going on and the difference between the Soviet-style system of appointed committees being set up as opposed to the constitutional system set up by the Founding Fathers with elected government and representatives that serve the people, separation of powers between those who make the laws and those who administer the country, and separation of power between the federal government and the states. The American system was set up to insure that the power remained with the people and could not be taken over by a group who might seize control of government. Of course, the ultra-rich and their self-serving think tanks and agents would prefer to simply take over and have their self-appointed committees decide how we will all live. It will be the middle class and average citizen who will have to make sacrifices of freedoms, rights, and their standard of living.

It is worth noting that without the helpful event of September 11 and the pretext of a lurking enemy, these changes necessary for the North American Union such as the umbrella government of Homeland Security, the Patriot Act, the National ID Card (internal passport), "North American Community", which have long been planned could never could have been justified.

Thanks to the effort of activists such as Connie Fogal in Canada, CNN's Lou Dobbs, investigative reporter Dr. Jerome Corsi and his book the Late Great USA, and Alex Jones' documentaries and radio show in the United States, the word is starting to getting out about the take over of our executive branch by the private interests who control the Council on Foreign Relations. We need to see the larger picture of the events of September 11 and how they have been used to justify take over plans that have long been in the works.

The North American Union did not just spring from September 11 as some kind of sudden bust of inspiration. It was planned and plotted for years by a small group of ultra rich who want to run the world. It's up to the people to speak up for their own selfish interests and to support the US Constitution and Bill of Rights and a government that represents and serves the people.

Write to Bumbershoot: Support Gogol Bordello and DeVotchKa!

Hey friends,

You might already know that I'm a big environmentalist and usually rally behind much more pressing issues, but today I'm taking a break from that to focus on something truly tragic...

I just found out BumberShoot scheduled Gogol Bordello and DeVotchKa at the SAME TIME! IDIOTS! So to combat it, please send the following message to their email address *and* post it as a myspace comment:

email: info@onereel.org
myspace: http://www.myspace.com/bumbershoot

text:
---------------------

Dear Bumbershoot Schedule Master,

I am HUGELY DISAPPOINTED by your decision to schedule DeVotchKa and Gogol Bordello in competitive time slots, on Saturday evening September 1st. Please reconsider! They share a large fan base who would greatly appreciate back-to-back performances from these two excellent bands. Neither comes to Seattle frequently and due to your contract limitations will not be allowed to play another venue in town during this trip. I know several people who would not otherwise go to the festival, but who are attending Bumbershoot this year specifically to see these two bands. At least a few of them are now reconsidering their attendance.

Please RESCHEDULE DeVotchKa and Gogol Bordello for the SAME STAGE so their fans can enjoy both of these rare and most excellent performances.

---------------------

Thanks!
Amy

Effecting Change: call for volunteers & workshop leaders

Hey all,

The Effecting Change: Tools for Our Generation activist conference needs volunteers to help with outreach and event support the weekend of. If you have some free time right now to help send out emails, make phone calls, and put up posters, email Jen Power the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@actionnw.net. If you have time the weekend of April 27th-29th, email Jen too. Either way, specify what you want to help with and how much time you think you can commit (approx).

The Effecting Change conference also needs workshop leaders - look at the letter below to figure out how to apply :)

Dear Tribe.net member:

The "Effecting Change" conference is back for its second year, sponsored
by the Gay-Straight Alliance at Seattle University. It'll be
the same environmental and social justice training event, but bigger and
better than before. The conference will at Seattle University on April
27th-29th, 2007.

The mission of "Effecting Change" is to bring together a wide range of
activists to mix, mingle, and learn the skills they need to effect change
in their communities. We want to inspire people to become leaders,
working effectively towards a just and sustainable world. Our theme this
year is "do-it-yourself" - the focus is to give activists the basic skills
it takes to get out there and start change on their own. Potential
workshop topics include Self Defense Training, Creating and Communicating
Your Message, Equality Training 101, and How to Plan a Successful Event.

These are only a few examples of the multitude of workshops we hope to
gather together at "Effecting Change". We welcome you to bring your
expertise and experience to the conference by leading a workshop of your
own. Please send us an email to tfogworkshops@gmail.com with:

. your name
. preferred title and pronoun
. organizational affiliation
. city/region you're from
. working workshop title
. workshop description
. your relevant background/ qualifications to teach this workshop
. scheduling preferences (if any, for either Saturday or Sunday)
. technical needs for the workshop (AV equipment, etc.)

Please send in your application as soon as possible; we hope to begin reviewing
applications in early March.

Hope to hear from you soon,
about condos going in where Manray, Cha Cha, the Bus Stop, and Kincora's are

Hey all,

Yes, six stories of condos are going in where these beloved bars (and Bimbo's Bitchin Burrito Kitchen) now stand. They are a block long, not very good looking, and the developer does not want any bars underneath his condos (he's been sued before for noise complaints - same developer that had problems with the Twist in Beltown). They are small and expensive condos, there are no rental units planned in the building, and the price of the retail spaces is doubling (from 14 to 28 per square foot).

The good news is that there still might be something we can do to make this less bad. The condos will go in, but we're early enough in the Design Review Process that we might be able to affect the final shape this development takes. I'll be talking about this, and showing off the plans for the condos at the meeting below. Please come, please tell your friends, and please be ready to write a whole lot of constructively critical letters.
my name is satori and I heart Sufjan!
I have decided that although I do not have the funds to
be in the front row at the concert at paramount on oct.15,
I will be and I'd also like a ticket for my best friend.
We are not groupies, but rather, kindred spirits.
I am asking this tribe to help me with realizing this dream and
any and all suggestions would be gladly received.
I am so determined and I think that this is something that can be done.
Whaddaya think?
I would also like to offer to KEXP free voice talent in x-change for tix to the show.
I am a "professional actor" and can sound quite nice for the right price ;)
Anyhoo~ I'm all about it so lemme know what your deal is...umm..yo.
loves,

Seeking fans of HOUSE OF FREAKS in Seattle

Every year the Seattle International Film Festival issues the "Fly Filmmaking Challenge", a two week start to finish production of a short film. This year I've been invited to participate and I'll be making the lone documentary in the bunch.

Back in the 80's I was introduced to the music of a band called HOUSE OF FREAKS. For those of you who don't know, they were a two man ensemble (Bryan Harvey; Vocals/Guitar and Johnny Hott; Drums), who many have called the predecessors to bands like THE WHITE STRIPES. They played Americana, songs about the backwaters of America, heavy on the imagery.

I hadn't listened to HOUSE OF FREAKS for over a decade, and about a month before Christmas I found myself wondering whatever happened to them, and was thinking maybe I should dust off my old records and give them a listen again. I didn't.

On New Year's day, drummer Johnny Hott arrived at Bryan Harvey's house to help prepare for the annual Harvey New Year's bash in Richmond, VA. When Johnny arrived he found no one home and the house on fire. He called 911.

In the basement, firefighters found the lifeless bodies of Bryan Harvey, his wife Kathryn and their two little girls Stella and Ruby. At first it was presumed they were unconscious from smoke inhalation, but when the bodies were brought outside they discovered that each of the family member's hands were bound, and their throats were slit.

Since the murders, two suspects have been apprehended. It now appears that this was simply a random burglary gone bad.

Not a day has gone by since I've heard this story where I haven't found myself humming, whistling or singing a HOUSE OF FREAKS tune. I saw the HOUSE OF FREAKS play live once, and although I had acquaintances who knew them, I don't recall ever meeting them, but I feel a great sense of loss now that Bryan is gone. I want to explore what that is... how is that a stranger can touch us from far away, and when they are gone we suffer.

The documentary has to be shot locally here in Seattle, and up until now I don't know anyone who has ever heard of this band. I am looking for subjects to interview here in the King County area. If you are a fan of HOUSE OF FREAKS I would like to interview you for my film A CRACK IN THE SIDEWALK. If you have a friend who might be a fan of HOF, please forward this to them or put me in touch with them.

On a sidenote, residents of Richmond, VA and friends of the Harveys are trying to purchase the Harvey house to tear it down and build a memorial park in it's place. When this film has premiered at SIFF I plan to donate it to their cause in hopes of raising funds toward their goal.

Thanks in advance for your help.

KEXP Boycott-Fire thieving CEO!!

KEXP Boycott-Fire thieving CEO!!
Public Radio station management out of control!
Again.
But paying themselves well in the meantime.
Financial Crisis!
KEXP projects a shortfall of $72,000 for 2005.
Must cut budget and staff.
Paul Allen pulls out his billions and EMP support.
John in the Morning DJ makes $120,000?
And just happens to own a record label with KEXP Advisory Board President Peter (yes, those) Nordstrom.
That’s publicly-owned, non-commercial, community radio for you.

Did you see the article in The Weakly?
Cover story-sorry Stranger, but I hope you guys get on this story.
Nina Shapiro does a good job of getting the dissatified staff members to talk on the record.
How long are their jobs for this world?
Past history at the station would be telling them to pack up their Cd's.
http://www.seattleweekly.com/featur...51207_cover.php

And the Stranger did publish the best article on KEXP/KCMU's sordid history in Apr 12, 2001 issue. http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=7007

There are so many convoluted and underhanded dealings going on at the publicly-owned station (yeah, you own it, licensed by the UW), in fact it used to be a student and volunteer run station at the UW for 20 years called KCMU.
It went on the air in 1972.
It put local bands on the map.

First a little history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KEXP-FM

In the late 80's a little cabal at the public/volunteer/low-rent station decided that it was time to get paid, get paid well, and for a long time.

Tom Mara (present CEO-salary $89,000, with controversial new self-imposed raise of another $20k), Don(Slack)Yates (present Music Director and former Station Mgr.) and former Station Manager Chris Knab (now instructor at Arts Institute) along with the already well-compensated Wayne Roth (head bureaucrat at UW-owned NPR Affiliate KUOW) all started working on a plan.

Problem number one: How to increase revenue so everybody could start getting paid.

Looking at commercial radio for clues, and these guys were always looking for some way to feed their music station runnin’ jones, they embarked on turning KCMU into a station that a lot more people would listen to, and support with their increased pledge dollars.

It seemed that turning the public-owned, volunteer-run, listener-supported station into something along more commercial lines would do the trick.

So they went and radically reinvented the music station that put Seattle’s music scene into the world's ears.

Gone was the highly rated Pacifica and local news (one hour a day total).

Most of the DJ’s and newscasters who complained were zealously barred from the station building.
DJ’s who questioned the moves on the air, including many well-loved 10-year veterans-were fired.

On came the schmaltzy, pre-recorded, easy-listening Worldcafe show.
Along came paid, everyday, drive-time professionals.
Music content was watered down, to not offend the greatest amount of listeners during pledge drives.
Salaried ad-sales, and development directors were now on the payroll.

And all the cabal boys started receiving a competitive radio salary for the first time.

The ensuing lawsuits, strikes, popular DJ firings led to many casualties, including Knab’s mental breakdown which lead to the end of his participation in the remodeling of the community station.

The station that rocked, became easy-listening worldbeat.

And that was just the start of it.

Many other controversies would ensue. CEO Mara has just been publicly exposed by his employees for giving himself $20,000 pay raises and losing hundreds of thousands of the listeners dollars on a meglamaniacal station deal. One that was not disclosed to the station’s asleep-at-the-switch Governing Board.

Listeners, staff and DJ’s are calling for the firings of Mara and Yates.
Please call, e-mail the station so more DJ's and staff don't get fired in retribution for this article.
Pledge not to pledge any more of your hard-earned dollars until these guys stop ripping you off.

"On Sep. 9th, KUOW/KCMU management announced at a staff meeting that KCMU would be firing its nonpaid weekday air staff and replacing them with paid DJs. In addition, the intent is to have all of KCMU's volunteers gone by the end of the fiscal year, and to hire a full-time ad sales person for KCMU (remember, this is non-commercial radio!)." http://eatthestate.org/01-03/EatTheseAirwaves.htm

The last Tandav show EVER is October 1st!

Ladies and Gentlemen.

I hope you are doing very well! I am well and very busy!

Let me begin by saying that yes, the rumors are true! Saturday,
October 1st will be the last Tandav show ever.

Deepayan and I are going to be concentrating on doing shows for our
group Mean Deep. We are actually in the process of making
arrangements to do some shows in New York City in October, and then
doing a tour into California and Oregon in mid November. Look out
Portland, Eugene, San Fran and LA. We are planning to see you soon!

I will also be working on finishing up a new album, which will be
under the name Baba James. If you haven't yet checked some of my
tracks you can check them at www.myspace.com/babajames

Deepayan and I will also be working on a jointly produced Mean Deep
album, and Deepayan will be working on a Shri Deepayan disc. You can
keep up on our exciting musical adventures at
www.funketabla.com

DJ Gringo Starr is going to be moving to Brazil in November.

It has been a year of rocking dancing, and good juju. It has been
fun, beautiful and soul fulfiling, but now is the time for us to move
on to new venues and opportunities.

We hope you can make it to this the final Tandav show. It should be
very fun and only slightly nostalgic. It might be wise to come to
this show if you haven't come because then you will be able to say
that back in the day you saw Mean Deep with Gringo Starr at this cool
little club called Tost in Fremont, in Seattle. Back before they all
became huge . . . ?!!! Word to the wise and the clairvoyant!

Here's the last little lowdown:

Tandav at Tost (513 N. 36th, in Fremont)

Show starts at 9:45pm
Goes til closing time

Featuring:

Baba James & Shri Deepayan (aka Mean Deep):

Rocking dancing music powered by live vocals, throat singing, tabla, sarod, darbouka, and original beats and loops.

Gringo Starr:

Latin and Brazilian House music on the turntables

a little about the performers.......

KJ SAWKA (interface, wax orchard-SEA)
are Seattle's answer to Roni Size's Reprazent... but our guy brings the
helter-skelter drum 'n' bass liver than the more renowned Brit.
Sticksman Kevin Sawka, has been raising pulse rates, body temperatures, and
libidos at full tilt for the last year or so.. If anybody's gonna put
Roland drum machines out of business, it's the Squarepusher-esque Mr.
Sawka, with an amazing display of frenetic beats and dexterous live
drumming.Tonight, Kevin will celebrate the release of his long awaited debut
release "Synchronized Decompression"

DJ COLLAGE (masse one- SEA)
Since his emergence on the reggae/dub music scene in the early 90's, this raggamuffin MC has grown to be a true underground favorite. He has rammed up several stage shows and done countless dubplates and guest recording appearances with producers, bands and soundsystems worldwide laying his dj toasting stylee over various types of riddims ranging from straight ahead reggae dancehall to downtempo club music.
In late 1992, DJCollage relocated to California and immediately began linking with several local bands and selectors in various forms of music. In addition to crossing musical genres, DJCollage had the opportunity to perform and tour with established reggae artists such as: Daddy U-Roy, Ras Michael, Barrington Levy, Messenjah, Raskidus, The Heptones, and Nicodemus. Through his collaborations, he also scored two top ten hits in the year 1994. One with the reggae soundsystem/band: The Positive Sound Massive titled "Unity" and another with local ambient/breakbeat group Dubtribe titled: "Mother Earth".
Determined to take his career to another level, DJ Collage started his Masse-One record label/production company and received many favorable reviews worldwide for his cassette only 2 song single:"Worla' Destruction/Sol pon fire" released in late 96'. But it wasn't until the release of his CD "Uptown/Downtown" did he really begin to earn a name for himself in the world of reggae music.
And in 2002, Collage crossed over into the field of Electronic music by being a featured vocalist on a top European release - "Encounters," by Austria's Sofa Surfers. This record received many rave reviews all across Europe and led to Collage being invited on a month long European tour to support its release. Since then, DJ Collage has gone on to record and perform with other electronic acts such as: Stereotyp, Megablast, 60 Channels, Meat Beat Manifesto and many other groups

M.O. (tekgnosis, numeriklab-SEA)
A native of the Virgin Islands, Maurice "m.O." Jackson moved to
California and discovered electronic music through bands like Skinny Puppy and
Depeche Mode, which led to him join Bay Area combos Nerve Factor and
Deathline International. After moving to Seattle in 2002, m.O. hooked up
with v-drum specialist Ryan Bird to form Tekgnosis; both are also part
of Numeriklab. m.O. won Seattle's 2005 Laptop Battle not very long
after purchasing his first PowerBook

CHRISTA WELLS (loveslap,trickdeck,kj sawka-SEA)
is an accomplished vocalist living in Seattle. Her style is is a
mixture of soulful R&B, sultry jazz, and rocksteady rythm. Her energetic
style conveys a confidence and understanding of what can make a party move,
while staying inteligent and unpretensious. Christa has worker with
such notable artists as Afghan Whigs, Trick Deck, LoveSlap, and most
recently, collaborating with Kevin Sawka in his project KJ Sawka.

B-SHORTY (live mc-SEA)
is a one man band, creating amazing sonic landscapes with his voice and
a bunch of effects and phrase sampler. Mixing middle- eastern like
drones and a strong hip-hop sensibility, his music will apeal to fans of DJ
Shadow, Krush and Ninja Tune releases.

ELECTROSECT (sensory effect-SEA)
Head of one of Seattle's most adventurous promotion/multimedia
companies, Sensory Effect, Electrosect is also a resident performer at the
excellent Oscillate weekly. There and elsewhere, Electrosect (Portland
transplant Patrick Haenelt) busts out gritty dub, hiphop, and electro
compositions on distinctive-looking outboard gear. He may not use a
PowerBook, but Electrosect definitely brings a rawer element to live
performance. Portland's loss is Seattle's gain

I wanted to let you know I will be through your neck of the woods the last 2 weeks in August on my west coast tour. I would REALLY like to play some records/originals for your home group of vibin united souls. I already have the majority of the trip paid for (i.e. transportation/la la la ) so I would only really a wee bit of gas monkey and possibly drinks/food if doable.. Im just super jazzed on experiencing the full west coast experience this summer, and it wouldnt feel right without yall.... Much love to you and your crew. Let me know if there's any events you can get me on or if you know someone I can speak to about it, and you can check out some of my streaming original tracks at:
http://www.myspace.com/joncates
:) I will be in touch..

Frederic Galliano, Akoma, Yaw Amponsah, at Tost, May 10th

Frederic Galliano at Tost May 10th.

Funke Tabla and Seattle International Nights are proud to present DJ Frederic Galliano at Tost May 10th, opening for Frederic will be Akoma, featuring master drummer from Ghana, Yaw Amponsah. Akoma will perform a live set of West African Palmwine beats.

Frederic Galliano hails from Valence in the South East of France. For the past decade he has been rocking crowds in Paris and around the world.

His specialty is combining the sounds of West Africa with fresh electronic beats. He is the pre-eminent producer working in this domain, and has actively encouraged others to get on the African tip; founding his own label, Frikyiwa, in 1998 to get out new music in this vein.

His most recent albums "Sacre Live," and "Frederic Galliano presents The African Divas" are a mix of Deep House grooves, with the music of singers and instrumentalists from Mali, Guinea, and Senegal.

These albums stand out as the one of most exciting and insightful mixes of West African music with club beats. As one reviewer noted, recommending one of the albums, "DJ goes back to the motherland--doesn't make fool of himself!"

Come and see what all the excitement is about as Galliano does a solo set at Tost on May 10th.

Tost is located at 513 N. 36th in Fremont, show starts at 9pm.

Tandav, Saturday at Tost

Alright! We are excitedly gearing up for the next Tandav show, which will happen Saturday April 16th at Tost in Fremont.

Deepayan and James will premier the original tracks "Lost Rings" and "5 Billion," and are coming with new tracks from the Middle East from artists like Fares, and Ruby. And some new Bollywood songs featuring singer Abhijeet, and some new Bhangra tracks by Sukshinder Shinda and Aman Hayer. And DJ Gringo Starr is coming with some exceedingly funky broken beat tracks and of course some sultry samba house. So you know it will be a damn good show.

Who is the Tandav crew?

Deepayan Acharjya: on the tabla, dhol, DJ

DJ Gringo Star: percussion, DJ

James Whetzel: singing, sarod, darbouka, DJ

How cool is Tandav?

Tandav is exceedingly cool and rare. Think about for a second, where can you go to hear live musicians playing Arabic and Indian percussion, live rapping, singing, live sarod, mixed with fresh Indian, Arabic, tracks, new Broken Beat tracks and Brazilian House music and throat singing? Where could you go? Perhaps somewhere in Paris or maybe somewhere in London, but even then it is likely that you wouldn't find anything as eclectic or as good. Fortunately if you
live in Seattle, all you need to do is go to Tost in Fremont on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Go and know that you are getting
something very special and badass!

Tandav at Tost
The night starts at 9:30 goes til 2am
Cover is $6
Tost, 513 N. 36th in Fremont

Deepayan Acharjya, DJ Gringo Star, James Whetzel
The Tandav crew

WHFS is history!

WHFS Abruptly Changes Format
Pioneering Alternative Rock Station Now Spanish-Language

By Teresa Wiltz
Washington Post Staff Writer

The Washington-area FM radio station WHFS, long a pioneering purveyor of alternative rock, did a programming U-turn at noon today by ditching the genre for a Spanish-language, Latin music format featuring middle-of-the-road superstars such as Marc Anthony and Juan Luis Guerra.

WHFS-FM 99.1, the radio station behind the popular alt rock music festival called "HFStival," is now "El Zol," featuring Caribbean and Central American music, according to a prepared statement released by Infinity Broadcasting, the station's owner.

Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc., the nation's largest Latino-controlled radio broadcasting company, served as a consultant on the reformatting of the station. Infinity and SBS have formed an alliance, with Infinity owning an equity interest in the Florida-based company.

The abrupt switch came as a shock. Since 1969, WHFS has served as the arbiter of cutting-edge rock in the Washington area, introducing listeners to acts such the Cure and the Violent Femmes.

The HFStival has grown from an offbeat spring festival to a nationally-recognized Bacchanalia that last year offered 36 musical acts spread out over three stages and a techno hideaway called the Buzz Tent.

"Certainly this will have major ramifications for new music in Washington, D.C., said Seth Hurwitz, the owner of the city's 9:30 Club and producer of last year's HFStival, which drew 65,000 fans to RFK Stadium in May.

"They were always the forerunner for presenting new music," he said of WHFS. "They were a vital fabric of Washington's culture."

KEXP Event Calendars

For those who keep up with the KEXP event calendars, you may be interested in some calendars I've put up on the web. I've added three calendars, one for the main KEXP Events Calendar, http://www.addtomycalendar.com/calendars/kexp, one for the KEXP In-Studio calendar, http://www.addtomycalendar.com/calendars/kexpinstudio, and another for John in the Morning's recommended show listing, http://www.addtomycalendar.com/calendars/johninthemorning.

I've only got events for January on each calendar but I'll be updating it every Wednesday. I realize you can already get these via email and the web but this site has two cool features you may dig. First, it provides RSS feeds for each event. Second, there's a little link next to each event labelled "add to my calendar" that will auto-magically add the event either to Outlook, iCal or any ICS compatible calendar program. No more data re-entry, just click the button, follow the links and you're done.

The site is definitely beta and is rough on the edges. Regardless, it's just my personal experiement though I hope it helps keep you even better connected to local events.

Enjoy.

I'm going to be up in Seattle next month with my band The Famous (http://www.thefamous.net) -- and I'd like to try to line up an on air interview or at least get them a CD before hand.

Thanks!

I was working the kiosk at amazon dot com making tons of cash at the espresso bar. And I hear that band and my life was forever changed!

alright, here's a band i might have missed had it not been for KEXP, or more likely my friends who are always tuned in... but i just walked down to the showbox to get tickets for their sept. 29th show, and they're only $10.77, i was expecting $15. the guy said they'd be staying lower for a while... get them while you can. gonna be a good show, even though apparently being supported by that OTHER station.

I am a firm believer that KEXP is quite possibly the best radio station on earth...

The variety of shows, music and viewpoints is astounding, and pretty much unheard of in this age of mega-corporate-broadcasting-profit-as-all-radio.

I got pulled in by Expansions in particular, but I love everything they dish up.

The only thing they could be a little more hardcore on in my opinion is political stuff... Those guys need to call attention to the Clear Channels of the world. They need to relish in their rejection of political censorship. They need to let me get on the air and say a bunch of crazy shit...

We can all have our dreams...

.....I have been introduced to since I started listening to KCMU/KEXP 15 years ago.
Some bands/music in the last couple of years being The Streets, Thievery Corporation, Electric Six, and Boards of Canada. There are a bunch more but that is all I can think of right now.
What is some of your favorite music that you feel you would have never heard if it weren't for KEXP?
